Built in tandem with the Wave uke, this long scale tenor is a 5 string, with both a low and high G, and is great for strumming. Like the Wave, it features a cutaway, ducted soundport radiused fretboard, arm bevel and custom rosette. Tuners are planetary-geared Peghed tuners that are installed from the back and don’t interfere with the rattlesnake design.
The idea for the Diamondback theme came from a peyote-stitch beaded ukulele strap I had made with a Diamondback Rattlesnake pattern. I used the same pattern for the backstrap and rosette for this instrument, along with a rattlesnake-shaped peghead, plus rattle and snake tongue accents. The rosette and backstrap were inlaid with tiles I made in the tradition of classical guitar rosette construction, built up from 5 stacks of different wood veneers, layered in different orders. The stacks were then sliced vertically and recombined to create the snakeskin pattern in cross section. The fret markers are slices of copper tubing inset with tiles from the rosette project.
I love the beautiful canarywood, and the sound of the curly redwood top, although it is very soft and easily damaged. The two G strings make for a rich, bright sound, especially when strummed.
