My nephew Ryan commissioned this ukulele, and gave me free license to design. It. I had been wanting to build an instrument out of some Black Walnut I had. It was salvaged from a tree next to Katherine’s cousin’s home in Paradise CA, which had been destroyed in the Camp Fire. My first design idea was a campfire with s’mores on the peghead, but I ended up with this flame rosette. I constructed it from colored veneers laminated around a section of PVC pipe, then ripped into thin inlay material. I made the tricolor purfling to match. Built using my Baritone forms, the top is X-braced. It is meant to be amplified with the K&K Pure Bass pickup I installed, but it has a nice sound acoustically, although quiet.
